About this event

Where is student voice in our schools? We largely make decisions for students, not with students. Our special education system needs a reset - with student voice driving the decisions we make.

The Co-op is inviting school teams* to join us in-person on March 8th, to explore how we can use student voice to redesign our schools. Using the World Cafe model, participants will engage in discussions about student voice: Which voices are uplifted? Which voices are shut down? How can schools incorporate student voice to improve accountability, build data literacy, and leverage multi-tiered systems of support?

After a morning of discussion, school teams will create action plans - highlighting the steps they will take to incorporate student voice when making decisions in classrooms, campuses, and LEAs. Can't bring a full team? That's ok! You'll still have an opportunity to collaborate and plan.

Event Agenda:

  • Registration/Breakfast
  • Welcome/Introduction to Student Voice
  • World Cafe Discussion Rounds
  • Lunch
  • School Team Action Planning
  • Closing & Networking

What you'll take away:

  • An understanding of the continuum of student voice - from input to leadership
  • Strategies for engaging students of ALL ages in their learning - preK to adult
  • A concrete action plan for centering voices of students with disabilities

*We recommend that school teams include a mix of decision makers (principals, special ed leaders, other instructional leaders), students, and teachers. Please note, this is an event for staff and students at Co-op member schools and non school-based registrations may be cancelled.

By registering you are giving permission for photography (still pictures or videos) to be shared to positively impact the Co-op's programs. You waive the right to inspect and/or approve the finished photographic product. The photography may be shared with potential donors, the media, and the general public. It is understood that the company will not receive any money or other payment of any kind for the photography nor for its use. Additionally, it is understood the DC Public Charter School Cooperative will make all attempts to give appropriate credit and recognition to those organizations in the photo.

Frequently asked questions

Who should attend?

All school staff are welcome, but we recommend schools send a team. A mix of individuals who make decisions and key stakeholders would be ideal (leaders, special educators, students, etc.). We encourage schools to consider bringing students to share their voice!

What is a World Cafe?

The World Cafe is a method for holding large group dialogues to ensure every voice is heard. Participants will engage in 3 rounds of facilitated conversations - all focused on student voice in schools.

Is there parking?

There is a parking garage under the hotel for $23 a day. There are additional parking garages in the area. The hotel is also accessible by Metro.

Will there be lunch?

Yes! We will provide lunch. We will try to accommodate all dietary preferences in the choices available.
